My Name is Raj combines a photographic exhibition with film screenings and a participatory installation. A pioneer of Indian cinema in the 1950s and ’60s, actor, director, and producer Raj Kapoor frequently named characters he played in his films after himself, inviting viewers to regard his stories not as self-contained narratives but as acts of self-dramatization.
This conflation of the screen image with personal identity became a common trope of Indian popular cinema. In Srinivas Krishna’s exhibition, viewers are photographed in the guise of Kapoor’s characters, then digitally inserted into his cinematic world, resulting is a fantasizing reinvention of identity.
